A post -'34 D axle has a 1.125" step on the pinion shaft, which in theory can be ground off to fit the earlier ('31-'32, '32-'34) types.
Though for my money I'd look for another one.
Chris,
Am I correct in thinking that if the D axle has non-Girling brakes, I should be OK?

I am using a 5.25 axle with 15" wheels (145-15 rear, 125-15 front) and a late 4 speed box with Keith Rawson close ratio gears (straight cut so they do whine, and I get questions about the supercharger!). This combination suits me. I have driven a standard Ulster to Sweden and was very impressed with second gear; I never checked the rear axle ratio.
