Mystery Noise
#8
In accordance with all the suggestions, I removed the fanbelt, and tried turning the camshaft pulley. There is no appreciable movement there, so I assume that the camshaft has very little endfloat. Also checked the rotor arm, but that was secure and tight on its shaft. Had  look in the tappet chest and all appeared to be as it should. Tried the car out, covering about 25 miles in total (see my post in the Drive It Day thread). My metal lepidoptera is still there,  but the engine was a little quieter without the fan running. I have reinstalled the fanbelt with a note to myself to overhaul the fan at some time in the future, although I found that, with the belt only just tight enough to drive the belt to noise from the fan is less apparent.

The car is generally running very well, and my recent investigations reveal nothing seeming to be amiss. The noise does not appear to be getting worse so perhaps I should stop worrying and drive the car until it does.

Once again, thank you all for the suggestions and comments.
