Going through this thread lets start with the gears. I suspect that your replacement gears are straight cut, as are mine in my Ulsteroid. Such gears lose less power than helical gears but they can be noisy. People have been known to say that my car goes well with the supercharger, which it does not have, but they assume this because of the whine. As for the carburettor it can't be stressed too much that absolute cleanliness of the piston and inside of the dashpot is essential. Taking an unknown SU carburettor and fitting it without checking for smooth operation of the piston with no gritty noises whatsoever is a mistake. With a downdraught instrument make sure that when the piston is in the fully 'raised' position it will move smoothly back to the down (closed) position. Up an down are horizontal movements in this instance. Lubrication should only be light oil on the guide; the piston should be completely dry around the outside. These comments are even more relevant to a downdraught instrument than a side or semi-downdraught. The needle should be properly centred in the jet, after taking all throttle adjustment to zero.
