Pully for special In use now for nearly 40 years
#4

When I bought the Basis of the special. there were a number of damaged parts. A nosecone and a dynamo stand. I was able to use them in the conversion. For the distributor I removed the complete dynamo and had a short shaft turned to take the cogs for the cam and distributor ends. (Sorry but I've lost the drawing) Filed the broken casting and turned it through 180 degrees and only used the casting that takes the distributor screwed straight on to it. Where the plate that covers the back opening was, I made a bracket (as seen) from 20x20mm tube welded to a 1.5mm  steel plate. A mini alternator was used with a bracket fabricated from 25x25mm angle. A couple of webs were welded in to strengthen it. This was bolted down onto the head using the normal studs. The wiring was altered using a method I found in a school text book. It has worked well and although it only charges at half speed has not been any problem. The starter motor is standard a 6v one which spins over a lot faster. There was a cloud of blue smoke the first time but never repeated. Its still on the brushes it came with. I will put another photo on as my photos seem too large.
