Rural Spain and France are much quieter than Hingerland. 150 to 200 miles a day is easily doable in an RP, more if the roads are flat.
I have to say Bruce most of my overseas trips have been 'planned' as we went along in the car, and I've only ever booked a room for the first or last night near the ferry port. I've never yet failed to find a campsite or a guest house of some sort, though I do tend to avoid busy areas in peak season. I appreciate that degree of vagueness is not for everyone, but it does free you completely from the need to be at a given point by the end of the day.
When I was a little younger and even more foolish we reached Andorra from the channel in three days in the Ulster, camping at Blois and Brive-la-Gaillarde - we were pushing it a bit, but with another day in hand it should be comfortable; and as Bruce says, you may often have the road to yourself.
