Hi All
I’ve struggled with the little van over the last few weeks. Engine out to investigate an intermittent knock / rattle which I thought was coming from the clutch area. Then installing the SU proved more complex than it should with an aftermarket filter starving the carb of fuel.
Finally, on a more successful note, I’ve covered the rear part of the van with Everflex vinyl. The reason being that, whilst the sign writing was lovely, I’m not Jack Acott and I don’t hail from Kent (the original builder put his name and location on the van). The sign writing is part of the history of the vehicle so it is undamaged and protected by the vinyl which will come off easily.
At last I got the carb sorted with a vintage filter replacing the new one. But on its first short test drive today the clutch again caused problems. The cotter holding the pedal lever has proved really difficult to pull in tight and allowed the lever to move on its shaft just enough to allow clutch slip. I got it sorted by the roadside! But the knock is still there. I now think it’s the dynamo drive gear that has a huge amount of backlash. I’m using borrowed dynamo whilst the original is rewound so I don’t want to swap drive gears just yet. The rewound dynamo should be delivered next week so I’ll give work on the van a bit of a rest.
Cheers
Howard
