A friend gave me a DFL dynamo to repair, it is my first DFl and it came devoid of all internal wiring, even the field connections were broken off at the coils. I've fitted new tails to the field coils      but which goes to the third brush and which goes to the F terminal? If all else fails I will have to try pot luck I've a 50% chance of being right.

I'm not an auto-electrician so don't really know for certain, but I don't think that it matters. Two of the field coils are North polarity and the other 2 are South, so if the current flows the other way then I assume that the polarity simply reverses. Even if I'm not right and you connect them the wrong way round, you won't do any damage.
