I've had a lot of success with a Sonnenschein GF 12 25 AG battery, Ruairidh. 12 volt gel battery from a golf cart or a mobility scooter. 28Ah cranking which isn't that much but fine for a 6v starter. The one in my Trials Chummy I fitted in 2007. Never charged it up. Never even took it out of the car. When I sold the car in January this year it was still performing as well as it did in 2007. It's length is a nats longer than you quote but others have got them into a Chummy battery box without a problem. Got one in the Ulster as well. Fitted in 2013 and still doing its job without recharging or any other attention.

There is a 12 volt battery the same size as the 6 volt for some foreign car which I've used for the last 4 years. I will have to extract it to find it's make and model number.

Very helpful, unfortunately both are too tight for the space I have available. Thank you however.

My Ulster has what I think is a standard Chummy battery box. I have a Yuasa 12N24-3 battery of 21Ah which is 186mm long x 125mm wide by 185mm deep including the terminals. I think it is of a type fitted to a large Moto Guzzi bike. It copes very well.
