So what would have caused that originally - levering from a corner?
The rust in the break/seam looks quite long standing.

Spokes usually break at some stress area. One cause is exposure to acid as in anti rust concoctions.

Don't feel too bad that corner has been cracked for quite a while from the rust staining.

Just my own opinion Hedd, but as this engine isn’t for your GE, I would go for an lc head, it makes for a much sweeter engine and not half as harsh as as one fitted with an hc head...but then again, you may be planning to race old bluey for all I know!
