I was presuming the carefully crafted elipse hole was for the offset drivetrain... and as that lot had a fairing underneath anyway, perhaps that was best fit for the previously reclining grille?

If you look at the 1931 Malcolm Campbell photo, it looks like it had the early radiator from the start.
