17" Ruby tyres

A lot depends on the quality of rubber processing. I had a set of Japanese Toyo Proxes on my MGF and they were brilliant, wet or dry. Now, they are made in Korea instead of Japan and they are nowhere near as good. Mileage is still ok but wet handling is decidely skittish. Good job I only take the MG out in fine weather now!

I have read with interest having just swapped the wheels / tyres on our special.  It has a set of longstone Ruby tyres probably 5 years old and all ok no cracks and all in good condition, even the spare which is on the back of the car probably lots of exposure to the sun.  The Firestone tyres I swapped over I bought about the same age are all ok as well.

But the Avon tyres on my daughters C1 which I bought all perished in two years.  But they only had one split in the tyre which went all round the tyre just above the wheel rim. I probably should have had a debate with the garage but I guess with out cutting the tyre up it is difficult to see how deep the perish split is.

You may have been unlucky with longstone tyres but it may not just be their tyres which are perishing.

I rather like the Russia Firm complaining that it didn't have the capacity they needed. I wonder if that was size, quantity or just bragging?

When did you buy those Avons Douglas?
I believe Avon shifted production of car tyres out of the UK quite recently.
I would guess Triple Duties are still made here (for now), in the motorsport / motorcycle / specialist division.
I'm thinking of buying a set soon.

Hi Chris the Avons were from a local tyre fitters, but as I say they where on my daughters C1 not A7 tyres.

I bought a set of Avon 3.50x 19 in 2oo5, in 2006 I took the car off the road and started what was intended to be a quick spruce up. Yes! you guessed it, here we are in 2020 and I'm only now ready to put it back on the road.

I'm not intending to use them but the Avons still look as good as new.

I've driven my ruby on both the 4.50 x17 fitted when I bought it, and when changed to 4.00/4.25 x 17 (not Longstones or Armstrongs) the steering was definitely lighter but the road holding deteriorated.
