A 1937 Austin Opal, in need of a repaint, for just £125,000) although he does say in the text that he will take £75,000!):

Well, I suppose it's worth a try!

I wonder where they get the idea that a late seven in that condition will fetch a price well over what a pristine car of the same year and model will fetch. Well my dad always told me it was better to put to high a price on things than to low as you can re advertise at the lower price if it doesn’t sell. How many times will he have to re advertise.

I have been thinking about this, the implication is that the car has such a high value because it is completely original and unmolested. I imagine that is why he has dropped the price by 50 grand since fitting the new hood, I wonder if you asked him to do the repaint he claims it needs as well if it would then be worth the same as all the other opals out there???

I am at a loss to understand why someone would think that an Opal in clear need of restoration would think it worth more than a Speed 20 Alvis or a RR 20/25 in excellent condition. I recall that, only a couple of weeks ago, our collective jaws dropped at  an RP saloon (admittedly in what appeared to be very nice condition) with the wrong engine and interior trim was advertised for a tad under 18K.

I notice that these overpriced cars are not selling: One of the Bonhams' entries is a military tourer that V&P Cars (who seem to deal in eye-wateringly priced prestige cars) that was advertised at £13,500. A similarly priced '29 RF saloon and a '27 'Top Hat' saloon priced at £16,500 both offered by another dealer in Oxfiordshire have been on the market for weeks.

Just because the sellers are asking over inflated prices, doesn't mean that people are willing to pay such sums. Given the present situation, I do not suppose that there are many people buying vintage and PVT cars anyway, let alone for 'silly money'.

I think he's more likely just put the decimal point in the wrong place.

I gather that his agent is delighted. On the basis of the pitch that the "ad" comprised, two comedy TV shows have asked him to join script writing teams.

I'd like to know who the "two Austin 7 specialists" are and what they were doing in the New Forest for 530 quid!
