For a an RN saloon bought in 1981 the total cost not including insurance and petrol is £14496.53 this includes purchase price and a ground up rebuild for a total mileage of 95331 miles gives 15.2 p/mile. Insurance since 1992 was £1083 over 57241 miles gives 1.9p/mile and petrol since 2004 was £5957 over 43058 miles gives 13.8p/mile.

Alan, in terms of astronomical running costs per mile, I see your Hill climb Ulster and raise you a hillclimb single seater

Calculations of £ per mile in competition has given me a new way of thinking about little navigational mishaps. Every time the navvy wrong slots requiring reversing into farmyards or nearly down boatclub slipways, as mentioned elsewhere, the additional mileage actually improves the £ per mile of the entry fee. Hurrah for navvies!

...it's the same principle as mass production?  A one-off bespoke item costs the Earth.  (Just bought a tin-opener for 50p - perfectly serviceable - how do you make, transport and sell a functioning tin-opener for 50p?)
