distributor timing
#11
For info I have just stripped a DK distributor and the number of degrees of advance 8 DEG was stamped into the underside of the rotating plate. Judging by the state of wear the actual advance has probably increased as the locating holes for the bob weight stops were quite elongated. The unit as a whole remains serviceable so it'll go in the spares box.

If you are reasonably competent with a MIG welder it's not too difficult to fill the worn area and file back to size. Or on a sportier car (with a good bottom end) just sit back and enjoy the extra advance - 16 deg is quite conservative.

Hi RR
If you can lock it in some position can use as a manual and wear except in the bush of no consequence. The optimun advance can then be found. With manual control a spring to take backlash out of thr linkage is desirable. The curious can even calibrate the control.
Based on baffling experience for years with another make with correct components it is prudent to check that spark occurs with rotor opposite terminal, allowing that the spark lasts for several degress.

Thanks for that, Bob. It's something still possible on my car as the manual advance lever and baseplate are still there, but locked off. Car is currently running with a Bosch dizzy.
