Bill,

our eldest, 10 years ago - tail pipe may be of interest...

Hoping this car will be at Guildtown...

I was just thinking that!

Bill, I think your problem is the combination of a late exhaust manifold which comes down a bit further and a new front pipe. I have an original one and it runs over the hoop but with a bit of a kink behind it to drop down and line up with the silencer.
I also have problems with my front brake cables rubbing on the bottom of the hoop (even with normal height springs, but yours look ok.
My tail pipe tucks inboard of the shock absorbers and runs below the axle with a slight bend below it. I've fitted an aly fish tail and it works quite well.

I am going to send Tom's plans to Andrew Goodfellow when I'm done.

It does look very purposeful Tom!

Will stick with the standard short tail pipe first and see where that takes me. The brown Cup shown above has suffered a bit of body damage due to the lowered road height so do be prepared for similar.

And what diameter tail pipe, as that looks bigger than the one on my 32' RN

Dear Tom

Thanks for the pictures of your very tidy rear end!

If I was starting from scratch I’d follow your front routing
through the hoop, but thought I’d have a go with the pipe
That came with one chassis.

What exactly does a fishtail do? Does it quieten the exhaust?
I know Tom A has one on one of his Cups and they were
obligatory at Brooklands.

My pipe diameter is 35mm OD so not standard at all.

I’m still messing about with pedal clearances, but will have to
remake the drivers side toe board to suit the new pedal positions.

Keen to sort out all underbonnet and front wiring in
Anticipation of the newly plated rad shell coming in a week or two.

The bonnet is completely finished and lacquered and ready to fit.
The CAV headlamp stalks will need some wedged washers
to get the lamps to point forward instead of cross eyed!

I may have to rethink the exhaust pipe routing as Neil pointed out that
I may not be able to make enough clearance between the pipe and
flitch plate at the point the pipe goes under the hoop....
Will keep you posted.

Hope you too can get to Guildtown.

Kind regards

What other original routings exist for the front pipe, out of interest? Do they all generally go under the hoop, but easier just because they are narrower tube?

Hi Jon

I’m pretty sure the downpipe originally would go through the hoop, it’s just I inherited a downpipe
and thought I’d try and make it work. It may not!

Ruairidh, I allowed for about 4" suspension travel when i ordered the springs so I'm hoping that with new stiff springs and the shock absorbers cranked up tight I'll get away with it. I've also relieved the body a bit along the inside where the springs are.

Bill, the fish tail I think is supposed to keep the noise down but I'm not sure if it makes much difference, its mainly there because I think it looks nice. My pipe is 1 1/2 diameter so not very standard either.

The elegant lines of a Cup come at a price as there's very little space around the engine compared to factory models which makes working on them a real pain. Mine has a tubular exhaust manifold with the flange under the passenger toe board which means that you have to take the exhaust studs out completely to get it off and you also need double jointed fingers to do the bolts up. I have added a little hatch through the side valence to get at the updraft carburettor without burning my arms on the exhaust. Its all ok if your car doesn't need to be adjusted or come apart too often!

Hi Tom

You’re dead right about the lack of space at a few points on the Cup.
round the pedal area in particular has taken some time to resolve.
I’m about to put a gentle curve on the clutch pedal to avoid the bell housing plus
I’ve had to move the cross throttle shaft mounting pedestals about 1/2”
To avoid fouling a couple of things. Most of these things now resolved though.

Now to finish the clutch pedal travel, the OS toe board and “under the hoop”!
