Bumpers chrome

Hi All

Have a 1937 Ruby and my bumpers need to be rechromed would anyone know of a good company I can send them too and how much would i expect to pay any help be great

They specialise in classic and vintage cars and have an excellent reputation. I used them for the wheel spinners for my Elan and they did an excellent job. They are often seen as the go to platers on Car SOS on tv.

The ones on my Ruby were in poor condition, I had them shot blasted and powder coated silver (so the back looked right ) and then filled the front to get them smooth, I then had them wrapped in 3M chrome wrap and you wouldn't know the difference (except where I started it in gear and rammed the tool cabinet and it marked it ) total cost £54 for both bumpers.

Hi Conal, the cost of replating bumpers is eye watering. I will happily get you a price from my plater but I would check out Willie McKenzie's excellent stainless steel reproductions which are probably cheaper than having yours plated.

Depending on what you are aiming for, a clean up, rub down, and a couple of coats of silver paint, doesn't look too bad - mine have been like this for 20 years.

If you live anywhere near the sea, don't waste your money on chrome-plating on a ferrous metal, it will start to rust very quickly (days). I know, as I had my Rover P6 re-plated (triple coating) about 3 years ago and within a week of fitting, rust spotting started, I expected this as I was warned a number of years ago when I had re-chrome work on a Rover P4 done and was advised to wipe the chrome regularly with WD40 - there are pits & craters not visible to the naked eye that cannot effectively be polished during the plating process so ends up being vulnerable. After I had my bumper re-plated I found that stainless steel replacements for the Rover were available (from Korea of all places) and wished I had spent the money on this.

On my Ruby I have the stainless steel blades and these are excellent and I have no issues of corrosion with these, but the bumper bolts (were new at the same time) are now showing signs of rusting but these are cheap enough to replace.
