All Alloy Cup progress

Hi Michael

Thanks for the tips to clean up the manifold, which I’ll probably do.

On my MG VA DHC I had the exhaust manifold vitreous enamelled...

Back in the sixties and seventies there was a fashion to have the manifolds aluminium sprayed. When I investigated I found it was also possible to have them stainless steel sprayed, which resulted in a beautiful dark grey finish. I have no idea whether there are still companies that can offer this service, but it might be worth investigating.

Very nice, Bill. What is that tappet cover? Is it a special one?

        Hi Erich,

I’ve happy memories of visiting Seattle, once for
ACM SIGGRAPH in the early days of CGI.
Had my first “smoke” at a Salmon smoke house
On Bainbridge Island and met all the CGI folk who ended
up working for Lucasfilm, Pixar and Disney.

Had another trip there en route to Beaverton
Flying over Mount St Helens the week before it let go!

The tappet cover is from a sidevalve Reliant 3 wheeler
Bought cheap on EBay after a tip from Malcolm.

Bought some oil seal cord today and superglued it
into  a loop. I will polish the plate and then Scotchbrite it
before trying out the Nyalic.

Knurled screws in alloy from A7 Workshop will finish
it off nicely.

Hope your own projects are doing well.

I have one of these Bill and did not know it was from a Reliant - thank you for sharing that info.

Hi Ruairidh

Thanks for today’s phone call. The plate
Had RELIANT in raised letters which I’ve ground off!

The one I have is plain so I guess somebody must have already done that to it...

Another dreich day in Borderland. The clutch
And flywheel in this car both had factory marks
Indicating 1:4 and 2:3 so re-aligned them to those marks.

Neil is making an alignment tool to centre
the splined shaft of the clutch plate so not fully bolted
up yet with the tab washers, plus still to double check
The lever positions so may need more attention.

I also sanded down the alloy valve chest cover
this morning , and tried out the Nyalic coating.

Very, very niffy but went on quickly with just a couple
of quick sprays from the aerosol. “Wetter” than
normal paint or lacquer. It’s supposed to be dried at
Above 12 C . The back porch is barely at that but too
niffy to bring somewhere warmer for just now.

I’d like to get a couple of warmer days to spray the scuttles and
the doors that would let me fit the floors, trim and seats which
Are all made. I may have to heat up the garage
With some oil radiators.

Nyalic is EXTREMELY flammable!

Refitted the door cards, floor and seats,
Plus adjusted the cockpit cappings.

Just checking the fit of all of these before Nyalicing the body.
( the stuff goes off quickly and is remarkably tough and hard!
It can’t be scratched with your nail and is a soft gloss
Not too shiny either)
Need to do those bits of the body that the trim and
cappings meet up with.

Once the front and rear scuttles are coated
all the trim can go on finally!

Will now start to measure up the wiring
And where to mount the cutout, coil etc.

Hoping to get the repaired nosecone
And starting handle back this week
Which will finalise the set of the radiator and let me
make a bracket to brace the headlight mountings.

Wiring up is my favourite part of restorations

Great work Bill.  I look forward to seeing it soon.  See you next week, I hope.

The Moose is currently awaiting her move to the new garage.

Cheers,

Colin.
