Introduction, Belgian Ulster rep

Hello all,

I'm Pieter and I have just bought my first Austin Seven or more correctly a collection of Austin Seven parts Tongue .
The setup to get the car friday, a 1000 km round trip.

We wanted an old English name and my girlfriend loves the Jane Austin books.
So ...

Jane has a 1936 chassis and the body work is fiberglass but for the short chassis.
Is mostly complete, but its going to be a long road ahead.

I have still a lot to learn, so expect a lot of questions from me.

The first purchase was  the Austin Seven source book

The next things are:
- Tires (thinking about the Longstones 17inch)
- Radiator (any tips, new? second hand?)
- Getting the engine running
- And getting  the body fit the chassis

An interesting pile of bits.

Looks very much like the first Ulster kit I bought and built 27 years ago.

It was also on a ruby chassis, with chris Gould fibre glass body.

You are in a good position to ask questions and do justice to the build.

As I unterstand all the fibre glass bodies were short wheel base, and are numbered. I think mine was quite high around 86. Although about eight years ago I brought number 3 back from Holland?

Has the chassis been SHORTEND, if so how was it done.

Also my opinion only, I feel the 17 inch wheels never look right on an Ulster. and will never have been rebuilt in the past, so old warn spokes on a car you are likely to want to go faster than a ruby may not be the best idea.

I'd look into getting a set of 19 inch wheels built up with new spokes and rims. After the shock of what it costs, I can show you plenty of ways to make saving in other areas to make up for it.

Pieter,
Longstone tyres are very good and if you are buying 5 they will do you a good deal. Your chassis has the later bent extentions which are much stronger for supporting the rear of the body than the original Ulster flat ones. I have an Ulster replica built on the correct 1930 chassis but I removed the extentions and replaced them with ones like yours. They have to be cut and welded to make them fit under the tail and I welded a piece of 25mm tube across the rear ends for extra strength. I built my car over 25 years ago in aluminium and there are no cracks on the body sides. All the best, Dave.

@Tony: Where is the number located?
The chassis is still the original length, I was thinking about cutting the supports off.
For the wheels, i'm not sure yet, its difficult to see on the pictures which is which wheel.

Do you have a photo of your chassis with the modifications?

My special also has a Chris gould grp body. Interested to know where they are numbered too please tony

Gould swb bodies look good and good to see those touring guards.
With notable exceptions, most LWB bodies don't look as well resolved imho

I will be able to take photos later this week for you. Another good feature of the extentions you have is that the use the shorter and more effective shock absorber arms.

Do remember it's been a long time since I had the GRP chris Gould bodies, and my memory isn't the best.

It may be on the prop tunnel or boot floor?
