Insurance at 17

Hi, I am new to the forum and I would be interested to know if anyone knows of anywhere that will insure me as a 17 year old on an Austin 7 Ruby?

I have searched around and most insurance companies who will insure Austin 7's wont go near anyone under 25.

My son had the same problem at 17 most insurance company's would touch him on a classic car and the company's that would insure him had quotes of around £5000 and that was 20 years ago. We ended up transferring his car into my name and having him as a named driver and that is how it stayed until he was 25 and for us was the cheapest way of insuring him, but he did loose out on 8 years no claims bonus until he got his own policy.

Welcome to the forum.
I was sure I had seen some posts on the subject of young driver's insurance on the VSCC forum, and there are suggestions of success, or at least quotes from Adrian Flux, Footman James, Heritage, Routen Chaplin, and by speaking to to Phil Dunne of Hagerty on 0333 323 0989 (I think they generally say 25 or over but it seems that others have had success insuring 17 year olds by speaking to Phil). I hope one of those will provide a quote that is reasonable to get you out on the road in your Ruby.

Getting insurance at 17 is not easy. Even 11 years ago, when my daughter started driving, we could only get cover for her by using an independent broker (now retired, I think) who happened to be a serious enthusiast as well and who was prepared to do the leg work to find an insurer. Once she turned 18, RH were willing to be flexible. We went through the same process with my son, two years later.

RH will insure you at 17 - there are restrictions, but they will do it.

My sister is 21, and we really want to get her onto the fleet policy, failing that we'll put one car in her name and she can drive that until she is 25.

I think she got a quote on a Morris 1000 Traveller at around £300, though we'd need it registered in her name. I can't recall where the quote was from.

Officially, any 18 year old can drive an A7 insured by RH provided the policy holder is in the car at the same time. This is standard across all RH policies for A7s following recent negotiations by Nick Turkey on behalf of the A7CA.

I have just spoken with Nick who suggests that this could be extended to 17 year olds if you contact them direct. I have always found RH incredibly good to deal with and very obliging. A phone call to them may be very worthwhile.

I have a couple of suggestions to make to you.
If you have passed your test and are a member of an Austin seven club then try the following.
Call Emma Airy at RH 03330433911, you should get cover if you are driving an Austin seven that someone else holds a policy on at no extra cost, but you must have the policyholder in the car for now.
When you are 18 they will consider letting you have your own policy for social domestic and pleasure use.
It is all great value and a great policy.

Sorry for not recommending RH straight away, they had required my brother (on dad's policy) be supervised to the age of 25 a couple of years ago so didn't know that they are now a lot more accommodating to under 25s. Great job Nick for negotiating that.
