I have seen the later Box Saloon-era cars with a single wire (the starter pull on the steering column bracket has a hole in the end - no groove - to accommodate this) and all Ruby-era cars I have seen use a Bowden cable system for this.

Yes Rory I agree, my Nippy has the open wire type, I was referring to the Ruby type when I mentioned bicycle brake cables earlier, I assume a solid wire was used with the open system, a bronze or stainless welding rod works well.
