Ok I realise I was misunderstanding, I though you were asking about fixing the hinges! Anyway Paul Beck Vintage Supplies do some solid brass hinges that would appear to be the sort of thing you are searching for.

Would not be that hard to make some out of material the correct thickness, I am guessing about 5/32" thick? The originals were presumably made this way rather than cast they look too thin to be anything else.

So you are doing a good job of this restoration, yours is a rebuild of a genuine car so why not attempt to recreate the hinge as close as possible rather than use a substitute which may be acceptable on a replica. I thought the kink looked like it was intended and was going to ask you why!!!

Hi Ruairidh
I can see that the kink in the hinge might
Help with the opening of the clamshell
but the cutouts on one half of the hinge
do seem a bit mysterious?
Perhaps GE got a job lot of cheap hinges?
Personally I think a strong hinge is needed
Due to the weight of the shell, frame and wheel
And tyre.
One of Tom’s cars may provide the answer?
Regards
