I am greatly enjoying this topic! Since the plate is anchoring the spring to the axle beam then to accommodate spring length change on suspension movement there has to be some play in the shackle pin assembly? Or distortion of spring/chassis mounting? Whilst some may not like the appearance of a piece of tyre it should be relatively easy to cast insitu some polyurethane. Casting versions are available in a range of hardness up to 90 shore. Coloured in black could be neat and unobtrusive.
Could the alternate be to use a silentbloc or polyurethane bush in the spring eye at the fixed end to minimise any increased operating loads?

An enjoyable day at the Austin Seven Curborough track day. Two sons, two grandsons and one son-in-law and I all had great fun cramming in as many runs as possible - while enjoying the company of so many enthusiasts and their widely-differing cars.
And more.... And more... And more... And more... And more...

There doesn't need to be accommodation for movement at both ends of the spring, one end will do. The plate is only fitted at one end.

Thanks for your reply. I had understood that only one plate was needed. What I was trying to understand was how any spring length change due to suspension movement is accommodated on the side with the plate fitted? Since the spring is rigidly attached to the chassis at the centre then any change in spring length due to suspension movement has to be allowed for in the spring bush at the plated end with high wear/ stress dependent on spring camber?
