Crank and camshaft oil throwers
#1
I am currently rebuilding an engine with a pressure fed 1 1/2" Phoenix crank and a modern rear oil seal with a speedi sleeved flywheel.
What is the recommended approach to using the old oil slingers/throwers once modern lip oil seals are incorporated in an engine build? Do we just bin them or are they still a must?
Many thanks

You need the thrower and related oil drain hole. It reduces the amount of oil at the seal. I found without the seals leaked more oil.

Jack French recommended that you centre punch six or so dimples into the inner diameter of the thrower so it is well nipped between the bearing and flywheel. Apparently they make quite a rattle if they come loose. There isn't anything to be gained by omitting them, I'd agree about their role limiting the splash onto a lip seal.
