RL Saloon
#1

Enclosed is a very original RL saloon pulled out of a shed recently after 70 years of slumber.
Further enclosed is the RL tunnel stamping together with the same number painted on the underside of the bonnet - looking as fresh as the day it was done.
Both Jon Edgar and myself would be interested if anyone has a similar painted number in that position...or elsewhere. The chassis cross member was a favourite place.

What a brilliant find.

How does the saying go? It’s only original once!

Like this!
The number is the last four digits of the car number, presumably to keep the bonnet with the body when being painted.

We'll all be busy painting those numbers in yellow now...

If you held a gun to my head I couldn't paint those numbers that well. Looks like a pinstripe artist did it.

Well, whoever it was had some practice. He’d done 4523 of them v

I’ve seen this car in real life, it’s a fantastic piece of history. Very original and the floor is in almost perfect condition, considering how long it’s been lying.

Absolutely incredible. A car like this should never be restored (in my humble opinion). I'd love to have seen it in its original place of slumber. There's something very special about an old car that's rested in one place for a very long time.
My best friends parents had a barn full of old cars, Singer Vogues and Humbers mostly. The barn was always very dark and quiet and we used to play in the cars when we were young. Unfortunately the barn was somewhat neglected and the roof caved in and damaged a couple of the cars. They were mostly rotters anyway but still sad.
Thankfully the other end of the barn which contained a lovely Sunbeam Rapier was untouched.

Does that have orange window tint? The same friends dad has a '37 Armstrong Siddeley with orange window tint...very cool.

The “orange window tint” is usually the discolouration of the early laminated glass…I’ve seen it several times in cars that have been in long term storage.

Or the original owner was a prolific pipe smoker!
