Years ago I was travelling in France in my RN with 2 children and luggage (I was camping) so my spare petrol was strapped to the spare wheel. On a rather warm day pressure increased and the plastic container burst, thankfully without causing a conflagration. Sometimes I think modern safety rules take us backwards.
That's happened to me Dennis. I now simply take a plastic 'can', fill that and then transfer the contents to my metal cans back home. It's just easier that way!!
I'm waiting to be stopped while filling the tank on the BSA trike...I don't know whether the brass tank is classed as a "metal container"...
I also carry a 1 gallon "Pratts Motor Spirit" type can and have filled that on several forecourts

Sadly, and very much to my embarrassment, Ruby decided she did not want to take part in our journey!
All packed up and checked over several times in the last few weeks we got out onto the drive and I thought, just go round and check the lights and indicators……..and no rear indicators.
Spent a couple of hours checking all the wiring for continuity and still nothing. Whilst turning on the ignition, the fuel gauge failed and after switching on and off it came on then off. I then noticed when I switched the lights on a with the ignition off the fuel gauge moved to half full.
So there is obviously something more sinister happening in the ignition system.
I spent another hour trying different things but got nowhere.
So sadly my tour around England and Scotland got as far as the end of my drive
I am truly gutted and somewhat lost for ideas, but Ruby was returned to the garage and we are now in our first stopover in the modern.
Rectification is for another time.

Having just endured a frustrating year or so with my Ruby (2 cracked blocks and an engine rebuild) I know your frustrations well! If you are still coming in the modern we can still meet up.
Sorry to hear of your woes. Not much use to you right now, but from your description it sounds like you may have a poor earth connection from the body to the engine block/battery return. When an earth lets go you can get all sorts of odd interactions between different components as the current "tries" to find an alternative path.
