You may well be correct Stuart with the venue being Firle !
At Wiscombe in 1960 , de Villiers was number 65 , my mistake . Having spent many hours researching the history of the car during de Villiers ownership , I found that race meeting information was much easier to find than hillclimbs of the period. When I sold the car in 2023 , the history file was included . Geoff.,

I should have added 750 Bulletin February 1963 front cover . de Villier , Wiscombe 1960 .

Perhaps a word about the Nippy, especially for those who have not had one or know nothing about them. The added on shiny bar bolted to the front of the headlight brackets would have been done to stop the radiator cowling from splitting where the bracket bolted to the (brass) cowling and the weight of wings flexed the thin brass.. My Nippy (special) has the modification of a flat bar fitted between the bracket bolts but inside the cowling out of sight.
One wonders if the Austin design was to allow the cowling to flex and the heavy front wings to flap and add a small extra top speed? . The wheels are either 15 inch or possibly 16 inch. I found 16 used to be a good compromise between good acceleration/road holding and not too high revs. but had to change to 15 when 16 tyres became virtually impossible to get. The correct 19 inch were too hairy at top speed and frightened even me. Dennis |
