That was me.

A leather disc - copied from our heavy 12/4 Clifton - works a treat.

Whilst the boot does keep the dirt out it's main purpose is to keep the lubricant in.

Lubricant is easily added - grit is not so easily removed and causes most damage, in my experience.

Some boots stay on, for those that don’t the disc is an easy and proven alternative - particularly on faster cars, I have found.

Seeing this thread and the various improvement mods available, (I've also got an old article by Peter Sanders on Carden block adaptors) are others finding that modern replacement pins and carden blocks ARE quite satisfactory?

I would be interested to know whether some posters started with ChrisKC's intentions to stay vintage but decided to undertake conversions because of the consideration of cars running well above all else.
