Somewhat regrettably, no. At least not until a few decades later. Otherwise you would all likely be spared my tedious contributions (and the Jowett Club similar). 
 I always caution young persons about getting too involved with un social hobbies. Eons ago I was a radio tech and some  colleagues were absorbed in that all engrossing passtime. Did not serve several well. With hindsight all seems very futile. Can now acheive for nothing with a cellphone what they spent all their evenings and spare time pursuing.
Much the same now applies to cars. Hardly any of my hard won knowledge and abilites are needed or can be reasonably applied to moderns.
However many oldies are challenged  for an interest in anything. For me there are not enough days.
