It has been a long while since I had mine apart, there is a piece of plastic (probably cellulose from the factory) that isolates the horn away from the indicator, I can't remember exactly how it fitted & I am not about to take it apart to see, but it was a flat piece, I used acetate sheet to replace the original mangled item, that was about 7 or 8 years ago, job done!

Rauiradh just to prove your theory about the indicator cancelling bracket. I think if the steering wheel is removed the bracket can be removed by undoing the one holding stud. Replace the wheel temporarily and see if the same thing happens. That way you will know if it is going to ground through the bracket and can direct your attention in the right direction.
