well its definatly sad to see numbers being robbed.
even as a replica with its original reg, would it be £12K plus. it still unusual and SWB. will be interesting to see how much it looses, for the number being robbed. it will still make someone a lovely and unusual car. although i didnt think there were any 2 number registrations left for age related. and havent been for near 10 years. in fact as i understood all pre war numbers had been used. and they were useing 3 numbers 3 letters now for pre-war cars. happy to be proven wrong though. tony.

The DVLA have been holding back all the interesting ones for years, and auctioning them. Fitting the system of course, like PEN 1 S and so on, although that one might be an exception that isn't released for other reasons...
Tony, 'BF' has "been" for pre 1930 2+4 and everyone is wondering what will happen as the the series approaches 9999, just as they must have been when SV was ending? There seem to be plenty of part used series for it to move onto; counties which plague wiped out or didn't have many people in the first place. The post-30 3+3 demonstrate such, with all having that particular flavour of Xs and H we increasingly come to love. But both have an interesting mix - foreign imports (rather than re-imports), those being lovingly assembled or lost and re-found.... and the British cars that have been subjected to quite-legal abuse before their owners leave. They should save the last category for something that doesn't tarnish the others. The BF- series seems to be currently just before 9870, and most of the series is motorbikes! You can check the DVLA road tax site to see them as they are released.... Also interesting that they hold back things like BF 6000, 7000, 8000, 9000, presumably for auction...

Like Tony I loathe the practice of removing original registration numbers, but in this case I think it's safe to say that DR number was not the original number for the car. The DR series was begun in 1904 and was up in the 4,000s by 1926, so in all probability 2610 dates from around 1920.

PEN 1 S will never be released, I suspect, as it is likely to get confused with PEN 15 which was a well known registration number round here on the car owned by Steve Parish...

In Sheffield, during the 1980s if I remember correctly, there was a Mini with a number that scanned as "BOLLOCKS". Probably recalled by now.

In the '60s there was, in Birmingham, a Cortina registered BOM 2 A. The owner had affixed a second number plate above it reading TA RA RA.

There was a black BMW in Nottingham driven by an equally black gentleman who always had a big smile on his face - the registration number was N16 GER. That number is not listed on the DVLA site, so it looks like it's been recalled! |
