In the days of the Seven torque wrenches were almost unknown. Ratchet socket sets expensive and uncommon. Most used a standard spanner the length of which assisted appropriate torsion. Many had extensive experience from bicycles, motor bikes etc.
Many adopt torque which is generously high esp for old threads. Based on steels 60 tsi etc which part may or may not be. For many loaded bolts on car likely just 45 tsi same as common h.t hardware, light loaded bolts just mild steel. Many sources give torsion figures for. For 5/16 15 and 9 lbs ft max respectively. As above a myriad makers made Seven kingpin sets.
