I have a recollection that you can use the main body and field windings from a later forward facing motor to rebuild an earlier rear facing type (post bacon slicer, of course.)
Am I correct? If so I'll go and find a tired later starter...

You would need to reverse the field connections otherwise it will turn the wrong way

Golf TDI goes the right direction and is internally geared so more compact than wasp.

I think you have to reposition the brushes on the end plate to change the direction of rotation.

I'm sure there was an article by Ray Moses on exactly this topic either in the Bristol club newsletter or one of the downloadable Hereford club newsletters. I'm away from home at the moment else I'd look for it.
