Long brake levers

I'm not sure what you mean Bob, but with split braking the handbrake linkage is extremely simple.
The front cable loops round the hand lever about 4" above the pivot on the cross-member. The result is that there is direct connection to the wheel brake levers. Nothing else to affect the operation. The harder you pull the lever the more the brakes come on and the limit is whether the lever hits the end of its travel or the driver runs out of muscle power.
Long levers tend to make the lever reach the end of its travel sooner but make better use of the driver's muscle power.
The advantage of split braking is that the driver does the compensation front to back. With coupled braking the front-back compensation is often not very effective, hence modifications such as the Holland Birkett brakes discussed in a current thread.
