ELTOS Remote Gear Lever
#21
Isn't the Eltos shown for a three speed gearbox- the later discussions are about a four speed remote which is different.

Just curious why is there a big notch in the Eltos at the start of the tube ?

There was a 4 speed Eltos too.

The notch is for the speedo cable

I did have a look at it, but I can't decipher it from the pic. The description of it makes it somewhat less opaque though.
I'm kind of favouring the possibility of grinding down the detent, but that will mean taking out the gearbox at some point, which I currently don't have any intention of doing!

This may provide a temporary solution, thanks.

Yes, here's a 4-speed Eltos remote. (Not my pic)

Of course !

Never seen a four speed Eltos - must have had a clever reverse lift

Cheers.

I have used a 4 speed Eltos very succesfully for well over 30 years, mine uses a reverse lockout based on the ones Austin fitted to their single seat racers. I have also used several homemade variarions on the remote scheme all of which rattled but otherwise worked well enough. One of the nicest 4 speed remotes I have seeen was made by my late friend Joss Campbell, I posted pictures of it on here a few years ago.

Made with an abundance of skill and a bucket of broken spare parts.
Brilliant work from Joss

I have driven a few sporty modern cars with paddle gear change on the steering wheel but this is a close as you can get on an Austin 7. Very clever use of steering parts to make a gear change!
