Sports (Nippy/Speedy) Radiator
#11
My final approach to rad cleaning.

I cheap pump (under £30), a bucket of hot water and some Irontite Thoroflush (other cleaners may also work). The pump is submersed in the bucket and pumps in the bottom hose. The flow out of the top goes into a kitchen sieve to catch any large chunks. This approach really pushes the water through.
I left it pumping for 30 mins, swapped over the inlet/outlet, refreshed the solution and went again. Much better afterwards.
If you're seriously contemplating a very expensive new rad 30 or 40 quid as a last ditch using this approach or even hot, dilute brick cleaning acid has to worth a go.

Also check your ignition timing carefully with a modern strobe that allows you to measure the current level of advance. It's easy to get it out enough to cause overheating.

Thanks for the suggestions.
To clarify:
  1. the block was a new Tony Bett about 3000 miles ago
  2. the lower hose is a special silicone version with a 45 degree bend to avoid kinking and restricting flow
  3. a four blade fan is fitted

I got the Speedy on the road 25 years ago and in the subsequent 20,000 miles it has always had a tendency to overheat. The only thing I haven't changed is the radiator. All the advice I have seen on the forum is that it is nearly impossible to unclog a choked radiator by chemical means. Happy to be disabused. Smile

Ah OK. Thanks for clarifying Martin.
If the radiator is already off the car the next thing I'd do is talk to a radiator repair specialist.
You may well be right that "it is nearly impossible to unclog a choked radiator by chemical means" but it's surely worth a call to someone who does this stuff for a living.
My plug for Lincolnshire Radiators is based on personal experience, they'll do everything in their power to help and at quite reasonable cost - speak to Dave Campbell on +44 7734 666743.
