I always understood that the brown bakelite was used on 6 volt units, black for 12 volt.

Thanks Denis & Mike, that is interesting know.

I have seen black bakelite as 6V but the examples but they have been 1950's/60's in date.

I just had a thought, I wonder if the original RL that has recently been discovered has an old coil on it? A long shot I know.
