I have a Mitsubishi air source heat pump, it has been installed and running for the last 4 years - I have underfloor heating throughout, south facing with great solar gains both summer and winter.
The house was extensively renovated and insulation installed above that of the required amount by Building Control.
I find the house very comfortable all year round and mostly wear shorts and t-shirt even in the middle of winter. I also have an electric Aga which can throw out the heat, this also runs all year round and adds to the open plan heating.
From experience through work, it would be hard to install one as a sole heating source into a property that has not been designed or upgraded to suit and would prove costly.
It is also worth noting that just because somthing is sold as being green and super efficient does not mean that it is cheep to run and maintain.
