Many thanks for everyone's help & advice. What an excellent site this is the first time I have used it. None of the businesses I have contacted felt they could be restored but a pal who is an electrical wizard (in other words much more competent than me) likes a challenge & with all your advice reckons he can do it!
I will post the outcome in due course!
Many thanks everyone

I am guessing it is beyond simplistic but my 33 sender also didn't work. It turned out to be a combination of 2 simple things. First of all the earthing through the tank bolts was inufficient so I added a separate earth. It then worked intermittently and that just needed Brasso on the resistance coil and a slight bending of the contact arm and all has been well for 9 years.
Best of luck
