1938 Rear axle

I'm checking the pinion assembly for wear. 

The 'distance piece for bevel pinion bearing'  (1A 7660 or 1A 7675) is known to fret and wear.

Can anyone confirm the factory dimension (length)?

The CI 1A7675 measures 1 1/8" in length.

Strange?

I have the spacer from my axle in front of me. It seems to be a 1A 7660, but no part number.

Dimensions:

Outside dia. 1 1/2 "
Inside dia.   1 1/8 "
Length           3/4 " but with a burr and some fretting. 

I wonder in what way the pinion shaft and housings were amended in September 1938 to allow for a difference of 3/8 " ?

This is the pinion assembly that my axle has, late '37/ early '38....

The alteration shown in the Sept 38 Journal is for the heavy Big Seven type axle. Does this explain the difference from yours?

I know the spacers are often worn but only when something is loose. Why is this so common?

Here's a 1A7675, Henry. As you can see it's cast and marked with the part number. 

The dimensions are:

O/A Length:1 1/8"
Ext. Dia: 1 9/16" and 1 11/16"
Int. Length: 7/8" plus 1/4" lip
Int. Dia: 1 3/16" then 1" at lip

I have tumbled upon few good dwgs of the layoutof the post 1933 axles but the one above is a good representation even though the bearing retaining nut is not obvious as such or the location of the shims.  For those unfamiliar may be worth retaining.
