That's a fifties Trico, fitted to a wide range of (not surprisingly) American and some British cars. 

Your original wiper would have been one of the cylindrical types, as per the photo's above.

That's quite different to all the Trico motors I've seen, it has the vacuum connection on the right. That wiper arm looks like it's home made, what does the spring do?

the spring does absolutly nothing. i bought this car as it is.

I note the groove in the topmost section of the spindle. If a stiff wire were to connect this to the arm below the spring in a way that provides some sliding tension, the arm will be pulled against the window and still allow the different angles of window opening. Easier to picture than describe. I believe this is the purpose of the spring and the connective part is missing.
Someone more computer saavy than me may be able to draw it.
