Gaiters and Pipes

Having unwrapped the go-faster tape from the exhaust of my Ulster Rep', I found extensive rot and the pipe has snapped. As it's a 'fairly' standard part I thought that I may have been able to find one through one of the normal suppliers. Alas not! Am I being incompetent (most likely) or is it normal to get a custom pipe made/fitted? Any recommendations gratefully received!

Separately, I am also on the hunt for some leather spring gaiters for my real Ulster. Wefco appear to have gone missing in action, so I'm not sure if there are any other suppliers (or supplies)? I have a pair on the Ulster Rep' which look great but I don't really want to steal them!  Perhaps there is a dusty set sitting in the back of someone's shed?

I found the same when I unbound mine a few years ago. I always imagined the heat would drive off any moisture, but instead the tape seems to hold it in.

I'm not aware of anyone selling Ulster tailpipes, and if you do find one I think you'll be lucky if it fits without 'adjustment'.

I ordered up some mild steel tube, filled it with oven-dried sand (it MUST be dry) and raised it to red heat in a makeshift furnace (a stack of bricks, a hair drier and glowing coals). You need to construct some simple wooden jigs to get the bend radii, angles & positions correct; then trim to length. It's a bit of a fiddle but achievable.

An alternative to Chris KC’s suggestion is to weld or braze tubes and ‘mandrel bends’ to the required shape.

Mandrel bends have the advantage of being a constant diameter through the bend.  I made up my exhaust manifold using sections of mandrel bends and straight sections.

One advantage of your way Howard is that it's a little easier to attain precision - unless you think your jigs through carefully hot bending is apt to be a shade off target here & there. It's fairly easy to do as long as all the bends are in the same plane, but when they kick off to the side (as was the case with my tailpipe) setting up accurately can be a challenge. Of course the downside of joining sections is you need modest competence as a welder...
