I’m ashamed to say I’ve done this — it wasn’t a nice experience and left me feeling a complete idiot.
Wooden block inside the crankcase and exert gradual weight on spanner seems sensible.

The best tool for flywheel nut or axle shaft nuts is an impact wrench you don't need to jam anything. Terry.

I think the purpose of the nut is to push the flywheel on the taper tight. Once that’s achieved it’s done it’s job and will hold it there to prevent it coming loose from engine vibration or shock.
