Apparently, the story is on Facebook. My son was quite interested, it turns out that the registration number (which is a 3 x 2) is not on the DVLA database but the vendor wanted to transfer it off before the sale. He didn't realise that this wasn't possible until he tried; accordingly, the sale fell apart.
Good luck to the vendor in grappling with the DVLA which, according to Facebook, is his next move!

It is likely that the DVLA will make the plate non transferable, which means it will stay with the car and remain part of its history....fingers crossed!

I had a look to see if I could work out what the plate might be from what was visible in the hope it would identify the car - guessed it might be something along the lines of BYG 30 or 69 - since YG was issued in 1937? - but nothing relevant came up on the A7CA Register or Vehicle Enquiry site - so I gave up.
Let's hope the number stays with the car.
