Many Seven dynamos have spent much of their life looking worse for wear with thrown solder and blackened windings, but even without revarnishing and resoldering often worked for years, esp if not revved astronomically.

Just to conclude this, I sent off the old one to Vince Leek who confirmed a burnt out armature and I now have shiny reconditioned one to replace the old one with. Excellent service and can thoroughly recommend for anyone else in need.
Just one question - the distributor drive appears pre-greased, but does the dynamo drive gear require pre-greasing, or pre-oiling?

The dynamo drive gear will be lubricated by the oil picked up from the camshaft gear, but if I was re-assembling a dynamo I would put some grease ion the drive end bearing.
