As an appendix to this thread, rather embarrassingly its worked out I should have just switched them around on the cars I have. The sports special has developed an annoying habit at full right hand lock at driving test pace (which causes quite a lot of body roll) of the steering arm going past the horizontal and locks the brake pedal up. Slightly disconcerting the first time it did it... It turns out as it has a steering wedge my standard DL is actually too short and in the straight ahead the steering drop arm is forward by about 15 degrees. Not helped of course by the lowered nature of the car and a standard steering arm on the hub.

There was an account on here a few years ago of a car loaned out for a wedding, but the steering became reversed! Some muscle man  had forced the drop arm vertical!
