would having a manifold exiting there like that be more efficient, or is the length before the box necessary? I know there are practical things in the way like throttle linkages, but in theory...?

It's obvious, you put the engine on upside down, or it might be inside out....

No leaking fuel on the exhaust pipe. A very worthwhile alternative to mounting the exhaust manifold. You need a shortened exhaust pipe to the muffler.
