Engine dating

Can anybody tell me where to find info on engine dating please?
I am trying to date 2 mag engines with numbers M44168 and M38027

Engine numbers were within a few hundred of chassis numbers (usually, but not always, slightly ahead). Look at the chassis register at www.a7ca.org and you'll get a pretty close idea of the date of yours.

Looking on the Registers is a good way of getting a date.  In addition, there are lists of modifications in Wyatt's Austin Seven Motor for the Million book, and the Austin Seven Companion.  From these lists, M44168 would have been built in about September 1927, M38027 in about May 1927.
