Drive it Day 2025 - Howard Wright - 27-04-2025

Hi All

Just a little reminder that today is the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs’,  ‘Drive it Day’.

I’m hoping to get out this afternoon but I’ve had a few set backs.

Firstly the van just cut out on Thursday, just a few hundred yards from home and despite lots of roadside checks had to be towed back (by me using my A frame).  it was only yesterday that I finally found the culprit…the coil. I had thought that coils gave a bit of warning when they were about to fail but this one just packed up.

Secondly the change of wheels from 19” to 18” on my Special has been fraught with difficulties. On another thread I described the need for spacers (18” wheels with 4 x 18 Longstones are bigger than 19” wheels with 3.5” Mitas tyres). But I also needed to change the mudguards, which has kept me occupied for most of last week.

Anyway one or other or the RK will be out this afternoon.

Enjoy the day

Cheers

Howard

I shall be out in my car today, even if it is just for a test drive. (See my post on the Mystery Noise thread)

The Cambridge Club had our annual Treasure Hunt as usual. The winners get the dubious prize of organising next year's event. Kari and I ended up in the most coveted spot, second, 1 point off the winning score... ;^)

With our snapped valve problems solved we had a lovely little drive out to the local Heritage centre at Bellingham to help with
fundraising. We were the oldest there sandwiched between 2 P6s and had a lovewly afternoon in dappled sunshine before just arriving back home ready for a roast dinner.

Hi All

Two out of three ain’t bad.  Took the van on our usual test run calling in at the lake for a morning walk around it.  Then headed up to the Elan valley in the Special, calling in at the lake for an ice cream. The RK stayed in the garage I’m afraid….its day will come!

The van’s tyres (3.5 x 19) look very spindly whilst the Special’s new 4.0 x 18 look quite chubby.  So much so that on large bumps they bottom out on the new rear mudguards (which obviously need repositioning).

The only other ‘Drive it day’ cars we saw were a convoy of Stags around Llandod lake!

Cheers

Howard

Pretend to drive it day... although we did eventually go about 10 feet forwards and backwards.

Drive it Day took me to Masham market square in the BSA. Lots of modern motorcycles one tidy MG Midget and there was this very nicely kept Seven

We went to the pub. No sevens except mine but a lot of Austin Healeys. Arrived just as we were leaving.

Took the RP on road test, having fiddled with it  in accordance with the advice kindly given in the Mystery Noise thread, to which I will post presently.

It wasn't all 'road test' though, as i combined it with a trip to Llanuwchllyn to collect some wood that a friend had kindly offered to Leon to make a seat for one of his horse drawn vehicles. Also, subsequently, I went down to the town to  bath the car and get some salad things as its too warm to cook today.

Bala was heaving, with loads of motor bikes but not a single classic car in sight!

Went to Lanhydrock near Bodmin to meet up with 3 East End members from Callington Dickie 65's type 65 was there along with Mike Davies's APD Opal and a Beautiful Rosengart. I was unable to stay or even meet with the main CA7C group at Par, down county, due to other commitments in the afternoon, so drove Lulu my '34 RP home for lunch. It was the Rosengart's first outing after a major engine rebuild (by Mike), and it was running really sweetly.
