12 volt to 6 volt horns - Erich - 23-03-2025

Hi All,

In converting my Ulster Rep from 12 volt to 6 volt, I just realized my horns(I have a Rist as well as a Klaxette) are intended for 12 volt. Will they work on 6 volt or will I need to flog them and find a proper 6 volt horn?

I think it likely that using a 12 volt horn on 6volts will give poor sound if any. You are better off going the other way where the right resistor might give satisfactory performance.

I tried a unit similar to this - a 6-volt to 12-volt  transformer with a limit of 3 amps - on a set of indicators and they worked perfectly.  https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002130449922.html?src=google&pdp_npi=4%40dis!GBP!7.62!6.59!!!!!%40!12000018839770812!ppc!!!&src=google&albch=shopping&acnt=494-037-6276&isdl=y&slnk=&plac=&mtctp=&albbt=Google_7_shopping&aff_platform=google&aff_short_key=UneMJZVf&gclsrc=aw.ds&&albagn=888888&&ds_e_adid=&ds_e_matchtype=&ds_e_device=c&ds_e_network=x&ds_e_product_group_id=&ds_e_product_id=en1005002130449922&ds_e_product_merchant_id=108148150&ds_e_product_country=GB&ds_e_product_language=en&ds_e_product_channel=online&ds_e_product_store_id=&ds_url_v=2&albcp=17859500389&albag=&isSmbAutoCall=false&needSmbHouyi=false&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwhYS_BhD2ARIsAJTMMQY4u8BBhyOZJdwOx6cQo8ipJN0g5pD1sNFsP4YIEYwKnS-oN4pgapUaApQFEALw_wcB

Hi

Horns tend to take quite a lot of current, so any electronic converter needs to be man enough for the job

Hi Erich,
I have a 12 volt horn similar to the Altette horns fitted to the Rubies. This works well enough on 6 volts to satisfy local (WOF/MOT) inspectors. It was not reliable for a while until I discovered that one cell in my 6 volt battery was faulty. With a new battery it's fine. This indicates that these horns have a high current draw, reinforcing John Cornforth's comment.
