An intersting period film - Steve Bryant - 04-01-2025 I came across this documentary of sorts on Croydon in the 30's. What I thought was a Seven pulling the HP 42 out of the hanger was a Citroen Kegress half track which I mistook in disbelief, (wondering how on earth could a seven do that). The bit at the end of the film on the overhaul of the engines i found very interesting. I hope this is of interest to you all as well.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SD4jhAcHKL8 Stephen RE: An intersting period film - Dave Mann - 04-01-2025 Yes a most interesting film Steve, watching the planes taking off is a bit like watching Sevens they gather momentum and claw their way up. RE: An intersting period film - Ray White - 05-01-2025 Airport House - a fine Art Deco building - still survives. RE: An intersting period film - John Cornforth - 05-01-2025 For those curious about the distinctive four long "outriggers" on the corners of the control tower, I believe these supported the bottom of the Bellini-Tosi radio direction finding aerials. These were a pair of large wire triangles mounted at right angles to each other, with the upper points supported by a central pole. This website has much more about early Air Traffic Control: https://atchistory.wordpress.com/2024/10/28/croydon-control-tower/ RE: An intersting period film - bob46320 - 06-01-2025 I believe that Heston Airport was going to be the international "London airport" and vied with Croydon, both loosing out to Heathrow. Heston was used by ministers (Nevil Chamberlain - "Peace in our time"). Bob RE: An intersting period film - Duncan Grimmond - 10-01-2025 Thanks for posting that film, absolutely fascinating! RE: An intersting period film - Nick Salmon - 10-01-2025 Wonderful footage. What an adventure it must have been, to fly in an HP42 all the way to Australia! RE: An intersting period film - Malcolm Parker - 11-01-2025 Super film, thanks for sharing. |
